Blackheads are commonly experienced by people with oily skin. They are caused by oil build-up on the skin.
Blackheads are characterized by a black tip on the pimple. This is as a result of the oxidizing of air on the oil that clogs the pores. The melanin pigment of the skin also contributes to this dark color.
How to Treat Blackheads
To deal with blackheads, gentle skin care products should be used since
harsh products can actually strip the skin of the essential natural
oils. The products work by removing excess oil and dead skin cells.
Apart from synthetic medication, natural products may work just as well. In some cases they are even prefferred as they don't block pores like some synthetic products.
Gentle exfoliation products are also useful in treating blackheads. This is because they remove dead skin cells which would otherwise block the skin pores. Care should be taken not to over-exfoliate as this would irritate the skin.
Many people scratch the blackheads or try to pop them. This usually causes the bacteria surrounding this area to be pushed deeper within the skin causing further irritation and infection. Furthermore forcibly removing the blackheads might leave behind scars. It is much better to use products that will help clear the blackheads as this doesn't result in scarring.
Though diet isn't directly linked to acne, it is a good idea to maintain a proper diet to avoid blackheads. A good diet may minimise excessive oil production linked to acne, as well as promoting production of new healthy skin cells. This will minimise the formation of new blackheads while reducing existing ones.
As is usual with other types of acne, care should be taken while choosing the skin products to prevent further aggravation of the condition.
However preventing the occurence of the blackheads in the first place is a better way of handling acne. Do this by eating healthy, using the right skin care products and drinking lots of water. Water ensures that the skin is well hydrated and maintains its natural and healthy complexion.
If blackheads do occur, take the proper steps to eliminate them i.e taking over the counter treatments or those prescribed by a physician.
